BACKGROUND:
The theme was inspired by the artist’s love for the game of chess and forms part of his chess duels series. The artist wanted to remind his audience of the 100 days that had passed since Putin invaded the Ukraine. It depicts both Putin and Zelensky naked, to reflect a metaphorical bare-knuckle stand-off. Stalin on the wall is a conscious inclusion to remind us of another Russian dictator who killed an estimated 5 million Ukranians during the Holomodor. Putin’s Nagant revolver and the Makarov of Zelensky is the artist’s take on a conditional ceasefire, which is likely to produce a violent ‘inglorious bastards-esque’ ending.
